"Perhaps the question is not, ‘Can we afford to provide decent housing and basic services for all humans?’ Rather, it is ‘Can we—the human species—afford not to?’"

Loveland Habitat Families Are Budding Chef’s!

The kitchen is a very special place in a home. And for my Loveland Habitat for Humanity Families, their kitchen may be their first real kitchen. So what better way to celebrate their kitchen but to attend the class, “Cooking Matters”, offered by Loveland Habitat in partnership with Share Our Strength’s Cooking Matters, an organization that promotes healthy eating.

A number of Habitat Families have been participating in the course, including Tammy and Leandro and their children.  They have really enjoyed the class and had a lot of fun learning about shopping for groceries, nutrition and healthy cooking.

Cooking Matters courses teach family members skills that will last a lifetime and more as they share them with relatives and friends. When families practice what they’ve learned in Cooking Matters courses—how to plan, purchase, and prepare healthy, tasty, and affordable foods at home—they are winning the fight against childhood hunger and protecting themselves from the destructive consequences of poor child nutrition.

Highlights of Cooking Matters’ program year include:

  • 89% of Cooking Matters for Adults graduates improved their cooking skills, which means they’re better equipped to make healthy meals for their families at home.
  • 97% of kids who graduate from Cooking Matters for Families enjoyed cooking alongside their parents during class, an important element in continuing to prepare and eat healthy meals together as a family.

After graduating from Cooking Matters for Teens, 67% of teens are eating more fruits and 50% are eating more vegetables.

First Ever 100th Home Celebration & Build-A-Thon A Success!

Our first ever 100th Home Celebration and Build-A-Thon was a huge success thanks to the great teams that came out to build, the hundreds of volunteers that worked so hard in assisting with event logistics and our construction staff and crew leaders who help to make everyone’s experience on site a once-in-a-lifetime experience! The memories that we all now have of the event are countless: from the homeowners watching in amazement as swarms of people built on their homes, to the tears of joy at the end seeing how much was accomplished.

Then there was the fun, surprise Flash Mob at the Kick Off Celebration and the inspirational speeches made by Loveland Mayor Cecil Gutierrez and State Representative Brian DelGrosso at the VIP Reception and the Celebration Dinner. Loveland Habitat is truly grateful for all the community support and out pouring of generosity. The 100th Home Celebration and Build-A-Thon is one to remember an cherish. We’re already planning for the next Build-A-Thon!
